Freddy as he was known was born in 1891 in Retford and was the son of George a maltster and Sarah A Barlow of West Grove Lodge, Thrumpton Lane, Retford, Notts. George and Sarah had 4 children.In the 1901 census the family are living at West Grove Lodge , Freddy is 9 years of age by the 1911 census the family are still at West grove Lodge however Freddy who is 19 years of age and single has left the family home and is living with the Elijah Robinson a paper manufacturer and his family as a boarder at Wharncliffe Side ,Oughtibridge, Sheffield , his occupation is that of domestic gardener.
Fred enlisted in Retford and served with the 2nd battalion Coldstream Guards, he died on the Western Front 0n 29th August 1918 and is buried in Ligny-Sur-Canche British Cemetery, Pas De Calais, France
