Frederick Charles was born in 1895 in Retford and was the eldest son of Frederick William a bricklayers labourer and Annie Elizabeth Bannister (nee Marsh) he had six siblings , five sisters and one brother. In the 1901 census the family are living at 86 Spital Hill, Retford , Frederick junior is 6 years of age. He met his future wife Kitty O'Brien and they were married at St Saviour’s Church Retford on 29th November 1915.
He enlisted in Pontefract and at first served with the York and Lancaster regiment with service number 10174 and later transferred to 22nd Scottish Tyneside battalion,Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action on 6th September 1918 , he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Loos memorial. Sergt Fred Bannister Retford Times 11th Oct 1918 This is a photograph of Fred Bannister, Northumberland Fusiliers who was killed in action on Sept 6th last. He was in the regular Army when war broke out, and went to France with the first expeditionary Force. He was the holder of the Mons Medal, had been wounded three times and was 23 years of age. He was married at St Saviour’s Church three years ago next month and leaves a widow and a child. He was the elder son of Mr and Mrs Bannister, 7 Wellington Street, Retford. Pte Fred Bannister, father of Sergeant Bannister, belongs to the Notts and Derbys, joining up on January 6th 1915. He served a year and five months in France, over a year in Italy and is now in France. Mr and Mrs Bannister have six children. The eldest daughter, Mrs James Pettinger, lost her husband a year ago. He was in the Notts and Derbys.
His father Frederick Bannister who also served during the Great War in the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys ) Regiment was also killed in action on 6th October 1918 a month after his son died.
