Family History

Phillip Martin Smith was born in 1895 in Bridlington, Yorkshire and was the son of Edward James a grocers clerk and Edith Mary Smith née Hewgill, of 58, High Street, Bridlington, Yorks. His father Edward James was born in 1852 in Castle Donnington, Leicestershire and his mother Edith Mary Hewgill was born in 1856 in Repton, Derbyshire, they were married in 1878 , their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow Registration District, they went on to have 9 children sadly 1 died in infancy , their surviving children listed on the 1891-1911 census are :- Doris Mary b1881, Robert H b1882, Edith Maud b1883 ,Leopold b1884, Barbara May b1890 , Lionel Hewitt b1892, Phillip Martin b1895 all the children were born in Bridlington. In the 1911 census the family are living at 31 Norwood, Beverley and are shown as Edward James 58 yrs a grocers clerk, he is living with his wife Edith Mary 55 yrs and their children , Edith Maud 28 yrs no occupation, Lionel Hewgill 19 yrs a technical chemist. In the same 1911 census we find that Phillip Martin Smith has left the home address and is a boarder/pupil 16 yrs of age and living at King Alfred School, Wantage, Berkshire.

Military History

Private Phillip Martin Smith enlisted at Retford whilst residing at Beverley, he served with the Sherwood Rangers. He landed in Egypt on 27th April 1915 and he was killed in action at Salonica on 7th October 1916 and is buried in Struma Military Cemetery, Greece grave reference V E 1
