Family History

Thomas Needham was born in 1890 at Shepshed, Leicestershire, he was the son of the late George Needham a hosiery hand and Mary Needham née Westley of 58 Regent Street, Loughborough. George was born in 1867 at Shepshed, he died in 1900 at Shepshed aged 33 yrs, Mary Westley was born 1870 she was also born in Shepshed, they were married in 1887 at Loughborough, they went on to have 7 children sadly 2 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his widowed mother is living at 2 Wheatsheaf Yard, Loughborough, she is 43 yrs of age and is on home duties she is living with her 5 children, Joe 18 yrs, William 17 yrs, Eliza Ann 14 yrs, Zachariah 11 yrs and Emily 5 yrs of age. Head of the household is Alfred Cutting 50 yrs a single labourer. In the same 1911 census we find Thomas in the Army he is in barracks in India, serving with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he is 22 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Thomas Needham enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Loughborough, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he landed in France on 4th November 1914 and died of wounds on 12th June 1915, he is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.
