Francis Moss and Mary Elizabeth Portas married at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire in 1893. They served in the licence victualler trade. In 1901, Francis was an inn keeper and farmer with Mary assisting in the business. They had two children whilst residing at Newton on Trent, Lincs, Francis born 1894 and Mary in 1896. They moved shortly after to Lincoln Road, Swinderby, Lincs and completed their family with two more children, William born 1898 and Amy born 1902. Francis, the elder, died in 1911 age 49 whilst working as the inn keeper of the Red Lion, Swinderby. Mary remarried to Gordon Neeps at Nottingham in 1914 and after the war was running the Lion Hotel at Basford.
William Moss would have been a very young man when he signed on in the 1/1st Nottinghamshire Yeomanry, (Sherwood Rangers). In the First World War the 1/1st Sherwood Rangers served in the Nottinghamshire and Derby-shire Mounted Brigade in Egypt as cavalry. In 1915 it was despatched to Gallipoli performing an infantry role and served as such for three months. It was whilst fighting in Gallipoli, this 17 year old was wounded of which he later died. His name is one of the 20,000 men who died in this campaign, on the Helles Memorial
