Family History

Although George Leigh Mawhood married Rosa Mary Emma Stanham Roe at Ecclesall Beirlow in 1879, they appear to have moved to Shepherds Bush, London as that was where their three children were registered. George had been born in New South Wales, Australia and Rosa in Glasgow, Scotland. Of their three children, Rosa was born 12/7/1884, Claud George on 29/6/1885 and Lionel on 4/8/1888. A few years later in 1891 the family are recorded back in Ecclesall Beirlow once again resident at 4 Park Crescent where George worked for a steel manufacturer. This remained the family home for many following years.Claud George Mawhood was the first to leave home and marry. He married Myra Gladys Stratton in 1910 at Ecclesall Bierlow and had a son in 1911 who they named Eric William Richard Mawhood. They resided at 148 Meadow Head, Woodseats, district of Ecclesall Beirlow and worked as a clerk to a steel manufacturer. Myra remarried in 1919 after the death of her husband, to Alexander Parker Hague at Ecclesall Bierlow. Brother Lionel married in 1915 at St Martin’s London.

Military History

His Medal Index Card shows he was first serving with the Notts Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry as a Corporal number 1843 and Corps of Hussars and was commissioned on the 10 October 1915. He went to Egypt on the 27th April 1915. On the Soldiers Died and CWGC he is shown to be in the 8th Battalion Duke Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment) although his MIC does not record this as such. His date of transfer is unknown but suffice to say he ended his career being killed in action on 14th September 1916 in the Somme area. As his body was never recovered he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
