George Kenneth N Lyte was born in Holborn, London in 1895. He was the fourth child of Richard Lyte and his wife, Margaret. Richard was employed as a diamond mounter. George had six siblings, Richard, Francis, Pauline, Nora and Dorothy. Margaret, their mother, died on 4th November 1902 age 38 and the following year, their father remarried to Sarah Ann Thompson in Holborn. By 1911 Richard and Sarah had produced two more children, Ronald and Douglas and George was working as a diamond setter at age 16 and living at the family home of 21 Featherstone Buildings, Holborn, London.
George enlisted in the war in London. He enlisted in the 14th Battalion of the (Kings) Hussars, Household Cavalry. He is recorded as ‘died’ on 26th September 1918 age 22 in Mesopotamia. As he has no known grave, his name appears on the Tehran Memorial.
