On 28th November 1917 the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry were operating in the deep valley westwards of Beit Ur Et Tahta village. A party of Turks were seen at Sheik ab ed Din mosque, which dominated the valley. Lieutenant Harter with a party facing the mosque, was mortally wounded while making a reconnaissance. Corporal Frisby was killed in the same action. Twelve Nottinghamshire (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry were killed or died of wounds that day consisting of Lieutenant Wilfrid Arthur Birchal, Second Lieutenant Harter, three NCO and seven privates.He is also remembered on the memorial in The Cloisters, Eton College and n Salperton War MemorialSalperton War Memorial also includes the following:‘Corporal Frisby, of Newark, Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry, killed in action with Lieutenant J.C.F. Appointed Lieutenant 15th April 1914. 3rd Battalion attached 4th Battalion killed in action at Bellewaarde Ridge)‘Captain John George Harter, Durham Light Infantry, who fell near Poperinghe, Flanders 3rd April 1916 aged 28’(1st Bn Durham light Infantry. The Brigade Major of 151st Bde, 50th Division, Capt. Harter commissioned into the 1st Durham Light Infantry from Sandhurst in September 1908 and gained his Lieutenancy in March 1912. Upon the outbreak of war, he was appointed to the 10th (Service) Battalion of the regiment as Senior Subaltern but, in October 1914, joined the 2nd Battalion in Flanders. In May 1915 he was appointment as ADC to the general officer commanding the 6th Division until July 1915 when he was appointed Adjutant of the 9th Bn DLI. In January 1916, he was appointed Brigade Major of 151 Bde and was still holding this appointment when he was killed at ‘The Bluff' on the Ypres-Comines canal on 3 April 1916. NB John and Clement Harter were brothers, but their exact relationship with James Harter has not been confirmed)‘Lieut.
