Arthur Nevil Glew was the youngest child of Richard Wade Glew and Sarah Clarke born 1896. The couple had mar-ried in Gainsborough in 1888. Richard was a machine tool fitter by trade and the family lived at 52 Trent Street, Gainsborough for many years. Arthur’s elder siblings were two sisters, Agnes born 1891, and Emily born 1894 both born in Gainsborough. In 1911, when Arthur was 15 years old, he secured an apprenticeship as a draughtsman.
Although Arthur Glew was born and resident in Gainsborough, he enlisted at Retford and joined the Household Cavalry Regiment and served with the 1/1 Notts Yeomanry (Sherwood Rangers} Battalion. He was sent to Egypt on 12th September 1915 with his battalion. They were then dispatched to Gallipoli where they served in an infantry role for three months. The Regiment then returned to Egypt and after served in Northern Greece. It was whilst in Greece that Arthur was killed in action on the 23rd September 1916 and is listed on the Doiran Memorial.
