Family History

Herbert Dyer was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire in 1892. His mother was Mary Ann and his father was Alfred, who had been born in Ireland and worked for a gas company as a lamplighter. Herbert had five siblings and the family home for many years was 2 Cambridge Place, Scarborough. Herbert had left the family home by 1911.

Military History

Herbert must have enlisted early in the war at Retford, as on the 27th April 1915, eight months into the war, he was on his way to Egypt with the Notts Yeomanry (Sherwood Rangers) Battalion. His military records appear rather sparse but we know that he died on the 16th September 1917 and that he was buried in the Kantara War Memorial Cemetery
