Robert Howard Aherne was born in 1880 at Robin Hood Lane, 4 Sunningdale Villa, Sutton, Surrey. He was the eighth of ten children born to William and Emma Aherne, nee Patterson. In 1901, the family was resident in Carshalton where Robert was employed as a clerk for a tea merchant. In 1906 Robert married to Lilian Rose Collins at Croydon. The had four children, Kenneth born 1907, Marjorie 1908, Dorothy 1909 and Eileen in 1911. Lilian Rose died around the time that Eileen was born and it appears that Robert moved to Thornton Heath, Surrey before joining the army.

Military History

According to Ancestry Soldiers Effects, Robert was posted from the Notts Sherwood Rangers to the 1/1 Worcester Yeo. and is also attributed with being in the Queens own Worcestershire Hussars in CWGC, and Royal Bucks in the Soldiers died. There are three Grave Registration documents. Two state his regiment as Queens Own Worcestershire Hussars and the third as in the Notts Yeomanry. Although unclear, he appears at some time to have served with the Notts Yeomanry and maybe had some form of connection in the area resulting with him being recorded on the St Swithun Memorial. He is also recorded on the Pevensey War Memorial in the Parish Church of St Nicholas as follows:- Aherne Robert (Howard) Private 276303, The Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars attached to the Worcestershire Yeomanry.
