Family History

Arthur was the son of Samuel a groom/gardener for a farmer and his wife Mary. Arthur Stoakes (middle name coming from his grandfather's surname ) had two siblings Henry Stoakes and Mary. In 1911 the family was living at Great Morton near Retford.

Military History

Arthur enlisted in Retford on 17th November 1914 giving 19 as his age although he was actually 17. He trained and served on the home front until the 24th June 1915 when he embarked at Southampton for France. He was shot through the neck and killed. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.

Pte Arthur Baldwinson Retford Times 29 October 1915 Another young Retford Territorial has passed to the Great Beyond. The gallant lad who was only 18 years of age, is Pte Arthur Baldwinson, son of Mr and Mrs Baldwinson, of Great Morton. He was formerly a telegraph lad on the Great Northern Railway and is the seventh Retford railwayman to make the great sacrifice. Lieut E Hacking, writing to Mr and Mrs Baldwinson says:- “I wish to express my sympathy and also that of ‘A’ Company with you in the loss of your son, Pte Baldwinson, who was shot through the neck and killed while doing his duty.”
