Samuel Hunt

Samuel Hunt was the son of Joseph Hunt and Louisa Williams who married in the Radford Registration district in 1877. Their children included: Mary Ann (b.1878), Sarah (b.1879), Samuel (b.1880), Alice (b.1882), Alfred (b.1884), Ellen (b.1888), Joseph (b.1889), Louisa (b1891), and Elizabeth (1894). The family lived at: 14 Truswell’s Yard, Ilkeston Road, Radford [C.1881]; 9 Three Tuns Yard Ilkeston Road, Radford [C.1891 & C.1901]; 503 Ilkeston Road, Radford [Army records/undated]. Louisa Hunt died at Nottingham in 1900, aged 44. Her husband, Joseph, who worked as a lacemaker, died at Nottingham in 1909, aged 51. In 1904 Samuel Hunt married Elizabeth Ann Stones at Nottingham. In 1911 they were living at 1 Auckland Street, Radford [C.1911]. They had a daughter Gertrude May (b.1904). However there would appear to be some form of subsequent discord between Samuel and Elizabeth Ann. This may well have resulted in him re-enlisting with the Sherwood Foresters in 1912. In his Army papers his next of kin is initially stated to be his father, Joseph, and after Joseph’s death it became his brother Alfred. It was Alfred who signed for his medals in 1921 giving his address as 72 St Peter’s Street Radford. When the Army form detailing the particulars of his surviving relatives was completed it stated he had no wife and no children. It merely listed his brother Alfred and his six sisters. The form was actually completed by Jessie Hunt, the widow of his brother, Joseph [Army records/1919]. Yet Elizabeth Ann Hunt and their daughter Gertrude May had not both died by 1919. Gertrude May married Edward Stanley Fisher at Nottingham in 1938 and she eventually died at Nottingham aged 86 in 1990. Her mother Elizabeth Ann Hunt does not seem to have remarried and died at Nottingham, aged 83, in 1965.
