Maurice Lee was born in 1893 and was the son of Arthur Lee a lace maker and Elizabeth Lee nee Henson of 71 Holden Street, Radford, Nottingham. His father Arthur was born in 1861 in Nottingham and his mother Elizabeth Henson was born in 1866 in Papplewick, they were married in 1892 in Nottingham , they had a futher son Samuel born in 1899 in Nottingham. In the 1901 census the family are living at 71 Holden Street, Radford, Nottingham and are shown as Arthur 40 yrs a lace maker, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 35 yrs and their children Maurice 8 yrs a scholar and Samuel 2 yrs. In the 1911 census Maurice is living at 2 Buntings Yard, Denman Street, Nottingham, with his grandmother Kezia Lee a widow 70 yrs living on her own means , he is shown as being 17 yrs single a layer on at a lithograph printers, also at the address is his brother Samuel 12 yrs a scholar.
Private Maurice Lee, enlisted at Nottingham and served with 12th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He landed in France on 9th September 1915 and was wounded at Loos and died as a result of these wounds at No. 1 Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge on 13th December 1915. He is buried in the city's General Cemetery, Nottingham. (grave ref 3563.B.) Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 14 December 1915: 'LEE on 13th inst. at Cambridge Hospital, Private Maurice Lee, 2nd Northumberland Fusiliers, died of wounds received in action in October at the battle of Loos.' Research Rachel Farrand
