Edwin Arthur was born in 1884 the son of the late Edwin of print worker and Mary Kate Allitt née Collinson and the brother of William, Albert Killed in action 15/10/1917), Percy, Ada, Kate, Florence, Lucy, Catherine and Alfred Allitt. In 1901 the family lived at 60 Garden Street Radford Nottingham. Edwin was born in 1861 at Radford, he died in 1914 aged 53 yrs Mary Kate Collinson was born in 1861 at Mansfield Woodhouse, she died in 1901 aged 40 yrs, they were married in 1881 at Nottingham and had 8 children. Edwin married Lucy Ann Cobb on 3rd June 1905 at Southwell and in 1911 they lived at 47 Church Drive Shirebrook Mansfield. In 1911 they are living at the same address . Edwin's effects were sent to his wife at Inkerman Selston Nottinghamshire.
Edwin Arthur Allitt attested in the Militia of Sherwood Foresters on 26 April 1907 and was re-engaged on 14 June 1908 when the Territorial Force began. He was mobilised and sent to 1st Battalion on 4 January 1915. On the 8th which was a very hot day, the battalion moved into the front line trenches (Quarry Sector) forward of Vermelles. The battalion war diary for the 13th August was notes ‘ 13th Weather fine, rather close. There was trench mortar activity from 9 to 10 a.m. and No 6 sap was blown in as usual. Our Stokes guns fired without warning at 8 p.m., and the enemy retaliated before the saps could be cleared, 1 man killed and several wounded and shell shock.’ Edwin was that man killed and his body was taken back to Vermelles for burial.
His brother Private Allbert Allitt enlisted at Derby, he served with 'B' Coy 12/13th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he died of wounds on 15th October 1917 and is buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France
