Family History

Joseph was born in 1894 in Wilford and was the son of Charles John Griffin an asphalter and Annie Griffin née Newman of Wilford, Notts., His father Charles was born in 1872 in Wilford and his mother Annie Newman was born in 1873 in Clifton, Nottingham, their marriage was recorded in 1893 in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 6 children all born in Wilford, they were: - Joseph Bernard b1894, William b1895, Mabel b1897, Charles John b1899, Mary Ann b1900 and Marjorie b1910. In the 1911 census the family are living at Post Office Cottages, Wilford, Nottingham and are shown as Charles John 39 yrs head of the family an asphalter he is living with his wife Annie 38 yrs and their children , Joseph Bernard 17 yrs a joiners apprentice, William 16 yrs a domestic gardener, Mabel , a lace joiner, Charles John 12 yrs a scholar, Mary Ann 11 yrs and Marjorie 1 yr.

Military History

Joseph Bernard Griffin, enlisted in Derby giving his place of birth and residence as Wilford, Nottingham he served with the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He joined the British Expeditionary Force in France on 8th September 1914. He was wounded and captured and made a prisoner of war, he died of his wounds in German hands on 22nd October 1914 at the Military Hospital, Lille and was buried in Lille Southern Cemetery 3.A.2.

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 9 January 1915: GRIFFIN. On October 22nd at the Military Hospital, Lille, Joseph Bernard Griffin, 2nd Sherwood Foresters, son of C and A Griffin, Wilford. In memoriam published Nottingham Evening Post dated 23rd October 1916 : - “GRIFFIN. — In loving memory of Lance-Corporal Bernard Griffin, 2nd Sherwood Foresters, of Wilford, died wounds at Lille, October 22nd, 1914. Oh, for the touch of a vanished hand, and the sound a voice that we loved. Sadly missed. — Father, mother, sisters, brothers Charlie, Willie (in France).” In memoriam published 22nd October 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GRIFFIN. — In loving memory of our dear son and brother Lce.-Cpl. Bernard Griffin, 2nd Sherwood Foresters, of Wilford, died of wounds at Military Hospital, Lille, October 22nd, 1914.
