John was born in 1897 in St Mary's Parish, Nottingham and was the son of John a lace manufacturer and Maria Annie Simmonds née Heath of 10 Cranmer Street, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1876 in Brentford, London, his mother Maria Annie Heath was born in 1877 in Nottingham, they were married in 1896 in Nottingham and went on to have 5 children , two sadly died in infancy or early childhood prior to 1911, their surviving children all born in St Mary's parish, Nottingham were John b1897, Dorothy b1905 and Winifred Mary b1907. In the 1911 census the family are living at 10 Cranmer Street, Nottingham , John is 35 yrs and a lace manufacturer he is living with his wife Maria Annie 35 yrs a housewife and their children , John 14 yrs no occupation listed , Dorothy 6 yrs and Winifred Mary 4 yrs
“A” Battery, 152nd Brigade Royal Field Artillery, John Simmons was killed by counter-battery fire - a direct hit on his gun on 11th August 1916. He is buried in Becourt Military Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt (grave reference I V 10)

Days and nights still hold their sadness, tears in silence often flow; thinking, dear, of how we lost you, just one little year ago. – Loving mother, father, brothers, sisters, brother Joe, cousins, and uncle in France. “SIMMONS. – In loving memory of Gunner John Simmons, R.F.A., killed in action August 11th, 1916.
