Family History

He was the husband of Hannah (née Brandley) Hemsley, the father of Annie, Catherine and Walter Hemsley and step father of Mary Ellen Brandley. In 1911 they lived at 17 Foundry Yard Nottingham.

Military History

Sergeant Walter Hemsley, enlisted in Nottingham, he initially served with service number 28299 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, later transferring to 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed by a trench mortar shell on 29th June 1916 and is buried in Loos British Cemetery. grave reference XVIII E 26

Id confirmed by Soldiers' Effects Register (widow's name) and 1911 Census. In memoriam published 29th June 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “HEMSLEY. – In loving memory of Sergt. Walter Hemsley, killed in action June 29th, 1916.
