Arthur Percival was the son of the Reverend Thomas Shiers Hatfield and his wife Frances Mary.Both his parents were born in Clapham, London. They had eight children of whom only six were still living at the time of the 1911 Census: Aubrey Haley (b. 1875), Ethel Mary Anelia (b. 1876), Elsie Mary Beatrice (b. 1880), Cyril Northcote (b. 1882), Millicent Jane (b. 1884 and Arthur Percival (b. 28 September 1890).In 1911 Arthur, an Arts [BA] student, was recorded in the family home at Kniveton Rectory, near Ashbourne, Derbyshire, where his father was the vicar.Arthur was ordained in 1913 and appointed curate at Nottingham St Peter's church. He married Caroline Hilda Ross (b. 20 November 1885), the daughter of Dr Alexander Ross, at Inverness Cathedral on 14 April 1915. They lived at 20 Corporation Oaks, Nottingham, and this was given as his widow's address on the probate record in November 1918. However, the later CWGC record gives her address as Sutton Vicarage, Retford, Nottinghamshire; this was the home of her brother-in-law, Reverend Cyril Northcote Hatfield, who was vicar of St Bartholomew, Sutton-cum-Lound (1917-1931).At the time of the 1939 England & Wales Register, the widowed Caroline Hilda was living at 30 Gledhow Gardens, Kensington, London; her occupation was given as 'artist'. Also living at the same address was Eva H Kitson (b. 20 November 1882), a retired teacher. Caroline died in Wokingham, Berkshire, on 20 January 1958.
Gazetted Chaplain 4th Class, 28 February 1916 (London Gazette 23 March 1916). Arthur served in Salonika on the Struma front, possibly attached to the 1st Bn Gordon Highlanders, from August 1916 and then from 19 September 1917 was in Egypt and Palestine attached to the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. From June 1918 he served with the Indian Army in Mesopotamia [Iraq].He died at Amara, Mesopotamia, from malarial fever contracted while on active service and was buried in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq (grave ref XIV.C.14).
