George Frederick Leverton was born in 1890 at Nottingham he was the son of the late Wilford a warehouseman and Sarah Leverton nee Aderson Stabler, They lived at 10 Bellar Gate Nottingham. Wilford was born in 1867 at Chesterfield, he died in 1905 aged 38 yrs, he married Sarah Aderson Stabler, in 1886 at Nottingham. In 1911 George was living at 90 Eland Street, Nottingham, with his grandparents, George Leverton 53 yrs an asphalter and Ellen née Brewster 46 yrs a shop keeper, He is shown as being 20 yrs a grandson and a tailor.
Private Leverton enlisted initially on 7th January 1904 at Ashton under Lyme, giving his age as 18 years 4 months. Posted to the Manchester Regiment. He was discharged 31st October 'having made a mis-statement as to age on enlistment.' He was in fact 14 years six months old when discharged. He was described as of 'good character'. Leverton was probably an interesting 14 year old; he had 'Fred' tattooed on his left forearm and 'Kate' tattooed on the nape of his neck. How and when he joined the Cameron Highlanders during the Great War is unknown. He was killed in action on 22nd October 1914 and is buried in Perth Cemetery (China Wall) grave ref. XII. B. 22.
Nottingham Post notice (abridged), 18 December 1914: 'Lance Corporal (sic) Leverton, 1st Cameron Highlanders, of Nottingham, saw fighting in India and was killed in France between October 22nd and 24th.'
