Bernard Johnson was born in 1895 he was the son of William a commercial traveller and MarY Ann Johnson née Smith of 7 Rushworth Avenue, West Bridgford. William was born in 1865 at Mansfield, Mary Ann Smith was born in 1856 at Radford, married in 1886 at Nottingham, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood their surviving children were, William b1887, Kathleen b1889, Walter b1890, Agnes b1893, Dorothy b1894, Bernard b1895 and Margaret b1899. In 1911 the family were living at 7 Gordon Road, Nottingham, William 46 yrs is a commercial traveller, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 54 yrs and 5 of their children, William is 24 yrs and a warehouseman. In 1911 Bernard has left the family home he is living at 6 Hill Street, Abertysswg, Cardiff he is shown as being a boarder 15 yrs, single and a colliery assistant, he is boarding with Richard Baker 29 yrs a colliery shoeing smith and his family.
Private Bernard Johnson enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 9th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he landed in France on 11th September 1915. He was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
2 of his brothers served and died in the 'Great War' Gunner 89613 William Johnson Royal Garrison Artillery was killed in action on 25th September 1917 Walter Johnson who served in the Army as Sapper 86672 Edward Roberts of 184th Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers who was killed in action on 16th May 1917.
