Family History

William Henry was born in 1882 in Nottingham and was the son of Henry Benjamin a timber labourer and Clara Drewry née Rainbow. His father Henry Benjamin was born in 1856 in Nottingham and his mother Clara Rainbow was born in 1857 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1877 also in Nottingham and went on to have 9 children , sadly two of them died in infancy or early childhood prior to 1911, their surviving children were all born in Nottingham , Edward Benjamin b1878, Mary Ann b1884, Julia b1887, Albert b1890, Sarah b1892, Harry b1897, Nellie b1901. In the 1911 census the family are living at 13 Knotted Alley , Leenside, Nottinghm. William Henry was the husband of Elizabeth Drewry née Roby whom he had married in 1903 in Nottingham and the father of Willie, Mary Ann and Julia Drewry, they lived at 20 Wool Alley Woolpack Lane Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family at living at 20 Wool Alley, Woolpack Lane, Nottingham and are shown as William Henry 29 yrs a packing case maker, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 29 yrs a slip winder and their children , Willie 7 yrs , Mary Ann 4 yrs and Julia 2 yrs.

Military History

Private William Henry Drewry, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters ,he landed at Suvla Bay Gallipoli on 26th October 1915 as a reinforcement to 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire). He died at No. 2 Western General Hospital, Manchester, on 19th July 1916. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery.

In memoriam published 18th July 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- 1916. He is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery. “DREWRY. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. William Henry Drewry, Notts. and Derby, died July 19th, 1916, Manchester Hospital. To-day recalls sad memories. – Fondly remembered by loving wife and children. “DREWRY. – In loving memory of my son, Pte. Drewry, died in hospital July 19th, 1916.
