George Thomas was born in 1896 at Halmer End, Staffordshire and was the son of Thomas a coal miner hewer and Florence May Brockley née Davis of 124 High Street, Halmer End, Newcastle, Staffordshire. His father Thomas was born in 1874 at Bilston, Staffordshire and his mother Florence May Davis was born in 1876 also at Bilston, they were married in 1894, their marriage was recorded in the Newcastle under Lyme registration district, they went on to have the following children, George Thomas b1896, Lily b1897, Evelyn b1900, Harold b1903, Thomas b1907, Sarah Ann b1910, Alfred b1913 and George Leonard b1919. In the 1911 census the family are living at 17 Tunstall Road, Biddulph, Staffordshire, they are shown as Thomas 36 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Florence May 35 yrs and their children, George Thomas 15 yrs a coal miner waggoner, Lily 14 yrs a potters fitter, Evelyn 11 yrs a scholar, Harold 7 yrs a scholar and Sarah Ann 1 year old.
Lance Corporal George Thomas Brockley enlisted at Newcastle under Lyme and served with the 23rd battalion Royal Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 3rd May 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial.
