Ernest Young was born in Fourth Quarter 1895 in Nottingham, his parents being Joseph, a newsagent originally from Liverpool, and Mercy, who was born in Clifton, Nottinghamshire. His mother died the following year, in June 1896 and his father remarried Clarice (Claris) Green in Second Quarter 1898. His stepmother was originally from Long Eaton. The 1901 Census shows him living with his father Joseph and stepmother Clarice at 9 Campbell Grove, Nottingham. Also living at the address are his brother, Joseph, and his uncle John Young. By 1911, Ernest was living with his parents at 6 Ashover Terrace, Manning Street, Nottingham. His father is listed as 'Hotel Boots' and Ernest as a chemist's errand boy. His brother Joseph was working and living in at the Gresham Hotel on Carrington Street, Nottingham. It would appear that his father's remarriage failed, as Ernest's pension record on the Western Front Association website shows his pension was claimed by his stepmother Clarice, who was still living at 6 Ashover Terrace, Manning Street, Nottingham. However, a separate record shows that his father also made a claim for his pension and he was living with his son Joseph at 12 Woodland Road, Midland Crescent, Nottingham, which is shown on the CWGC records as the address of his father. However, the pension appears to have been paid to his stepmother.
Lance Corporal 1659 Ernest Young enlisted in the pre war Territorial Force in November 1912 and joined 7th (Robin Hood) Battalion most likely around the middle of the month. (1656 James Kimberley and 1658 Frank Cutts both enlisted 19 November 1912) He went out to France with the now 1/7th (Robin Hood) Battalion, landing in France on 25 February 1915, and appears to have survived the Hohenzollern Redoubt at Loos in October 1915 and Gommecourt on 1 July 1916. At some point he was appointed Lance Corporal. He was still with 1/7th Battalion when the Territorial Force was renumbered effective 1 March 1917, being renumbered 265146. At some point, he was transferred to 1/6th Battalion, possibly when Brigades were reduced from four battalions to three in January 1918, and the 1/7th and 2/7th Battalions were merged and became 7th Battalion in 178th Brigade, 59th Division. His battalion took part in the Battle of Bellicourt, which brought about the breaching of the the northern section of the Hindenburg Line. It was in this fighting that he was killed in action on at Ramicourt on 3 October 1918 and is buried at Bellicourt Cemetery.
His brother, 134819 Gunner Joseph Henry Young, served in the Royal Field Artillery and survived the war, he lived at 12 Woodland Road , The Meadows, Nottingham.
