Father: Charles Holmes, born in 1852 in Northampton and working as a shoe maker. Mother: Mary A. Thompson, born in 1862 in Nottingham and working as a cigar maker. Brothers:Samuel J., born in 1887 in Nottingham and working as a coal miner, William, born in 1889 in Nottingham and Richard, born in 1891 in Nottingham. The family lived at 27 Independent Hill, Nottingham. Alexander Thompson married Ada Thompson in April 1897 in Nottingham. She was born in Nottingham in 1885. They had two children; William Edward, born in 1906 in Nottingham and Frederick, born in April 1911 in Nottingham.
Pte. Thompson was called up for service and following training he was drafted to France. The battalion took parting the final push against the German field army and Pte. Thompson was killed in action on 04/10/1918. He was buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gouy.
