Father: William Mosley Swann, born in 1864 in Nottingham, working as a joiner. He was a widower. Brothers: Francis, born in 1884, working as a compositor. Sisters: Rosa, born in 1888, Elizabeth May, born in 1892, working as a blouse machinist and Florence Helen, born in 1896 as a lace machinist. All the children were born at Nottingham, including Thomas Herbert who was born in 1890. The family lived at 71 Brighton Street, Nottingham before moving to 5 Peas Hill Rise, Peas Hill Road, Nottingham.Sarah Abbott, born in 1865 in Lincoln acted as the family housekeeper.

Military History

Pte. Swann volunteered for service and following training was drafted to Egypt, arriving at Alexandria on 30/03/1915. The battalion sailed to Lemnos on 16/04/1915 and on 25/04/1915 landed at Y Beach, Cape Helles, on the Gallipoli Peninsula. On 19/08/1915 in evolved in fighting near Scimitar Hill. The battalion eventually returned to Cape Helles and was not evacuated until 8-9/01/1916. The men were eventually sent to France, and were involved in the fighting during the Third Battle of Ypres. Pte Swann was seriously wounded and taken to a casualty clearing station, where he died the same day 19/08/1917. He was buried nearby at Dozinghem Military Cemetery.
