Family History

Father: William Seaton, born in 1852 in Nottingham, working as a gas fire man. Mother: Elizabeth, born in 1854 in Nottingham , working as a lace clipper. Brothers: William, born in 1878 in Nottingham, working as a gas yard labourer. The family lived at 6 Evelyn Street, Nottingham before moving to 23 Lindum Grove, Meadow Lane, Nottingham.

Military History

Seaton joined the army prior to 1911, by when he was serving with 76th Battery, Royal Field Artillery. His unit served in India, and on 17/11/1914 it arrived in Mesopotamia. They pushed the Turks back almost to Bagdad, but then over-reached themselves and were forced to retreat. General Townsend decided to fortify Kut and wait to be relieved by an advancing force. The siege lasted for months, and a week before being forced to surrender Dvr. Seaton died from a mixture of malnutrition and illness on 23/04/1916. He was buried at Kut War Cemetery.

In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 23rd April 1917 :- “SEATON. – In loving memory of our dear son, Driver G. H. Seaton, R.H.A., Indian Army, late of 23, Lindum-grove, died April 23rd, 1916. No loved on stood beside his grave; no dear one saw him die; we can only know he passed away without a last good-bye. – Sadly mourned by his mother, father, brothers, and sisters.” Above in memoriam is courtesy of Jim Grundy and his facebook pages Small Town Great War Hucknall 1914-1918.
