Father: Herbert William Linay, born in 1853 at Gaywood, Norfolk and working as a caterer. Mother: Elizabeth, born in 1852 at Lincoln, but died in July 1903. Herbert Linay remarried in April 1905 in Nottingham, his wife being Minney Brewster Linay, born in 1870 at Wilbaston, Northamptonshire. The family lived at 19 Mattock Street, Nottingham and later at 2 Arboretum Terrace, Nottingham.
C.S.M. Linay volunteered for service and joined the Scottish Horse, No. 427 and arrived in France on 01.09.1915. He later joined the Machine Gun Corps and rose to Company Sergeant Major. He was killed in action during the Allied advance known as the "Hundred Days" in September 1918. His body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Vis en Artois Memorial.
