Father: Thomas Jackman, born in Penarth, South Wales in 1863, and working as a railway engine driver. Mother: Mary Jane Jackman, nee Smith, born in 1863 Altringham, Cheshire. Brothers: Thomas J., born in 1886 at melton Mowbray, Leicestershire,and working as a railway porter, Stephen, born in 1889 at Penarth, Edwin, born in 1893 at Staveley and working as a railway messenger, George, born in 1895 at Neston, Cheshire and John Baden Powell, born in October 1900 in Nottingham. Sisters: Mary Jane, born in 1887 at Melton Mowbray and working as a shirt machinist, Margaret Elizabeth, born in 1903 in Nottingham and Isabel, born in 1904, in Nottingham. The family lived at 26 Mayfield Grove, Meadows, Nottingham before moving to 18 Mayfied Grove.
Pte. Jackman was called up for service and following training he was drafted to France as a member of 'C' Company. The battalion was hit on 21/03/1918 by the German spring offensive Operation Michael. They were heavily shelled in the sunken road between Ecoust and Noreuil. Gas shells fell across the battalion's rear areas. At 8.30 a.m.the Germans attacked in massive strength and severe hand-to-hand fighting followed. By 10.00 a.m. they had broken through on both flanks and soon after the rear was also cut off. The last message came in at noon and soon after the battalion ceased to exist. There were 655 casualties, including Pte. Jackman, who was killed in action. he was buried at Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy.
In memoriam published 22nd March 1920 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “JACKMAN. – Reported killed in action March 21st, 1918, William, the dearly beloved son of Thomas and Jennie Jackman, 18 Mayfield-grove.
