Harry Neal was born in 1885 at Lincoln and was the son of Henry, a groom and gardener, and Eliza Neal née Lambert and initially of 17 Altham Terrace, Lincoln. His father was born in 1854 at Kirton, Lincolnshire, and his mother Eliza Lambert was born in 1855 at Dunholme, Lincolnshire; she died in 1896 at Lincoln aged 41 yrs. They were married in 1876 at Lincoln and went on to have the following children: Ellen b1878, Alice b1880, Harry b1885, and Gertie b1890, all were born in Lincoln. Harry married his first wife Florence Emma Eatherly (b. Essex 1886) in 1909 at Lincoln and in the 1911 census they are living at 25 Newton Street, Newark. They are shown as Harry 25 yrs a cycle and motor mechanic, and his wife Florence is shown as being 25 yrs. Also in the 1911 census his widowed father was living at 17 Altham Terrace , Lincoln. He is shown as being 56 yrs a groom and gardener and living with his children Alice 31 yrs no occupation listed and Gertie 20 yrs a dressmaker. Harry's wife Florence was to die in 1911 at Newark; she was 26 yrs of age. Harry went on to marry again in 1915 to Lily Hunt (b. 1882); the marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district. They went on to have two children: Lillian born 1916 (Basford Registration district) and Harry H born 1917 (Newark registration district).

Military History

Harry Neal served with the 1054th Motor Transport Company, Army Service Corps. He died on active service in Mesopotamia on 9th December 1919 and is buried at Tehran War Cemetery, Iran (formerly Mesopatamia), grave reference V.A.14.
