Sidney was born in 1881 in Grantham and was the son of William a hawker and Mary Ann Ward née Thornton, of 40 Smith Street, Beeston. His father William was born in 1851 in Croxton Lincolnshire and his mother was born in 1855 in Branston, Leicestershire. They were married in 1878 in Grantham and went on to have the following children:- Sidney b1881 Grantham, Harold b1887 Sulley Derbyshire, William b1888 Long Eaton, Beatrice b1890 Grantham, Ida b1891 Leicestershire, Arthur Edward b1896 Leeds. In the 1911 census his family is living at 40 Smith Street, Beeston and are shown as William 60 yrs a hawker , he is living with his wife Mary Ann 54 yrs and his married son, Harold 24 yrs married a builders labourer, his daughter in law Edith Annie 22 yrs and their grandson Leonard 6 months, also his daughter Ida 20 yrs, a domestic servant, and son Arthur Edward 15 yrs. Sidney marries his wife Mary Elizabeth Cottam in 1902 in Nottingham, they go on to have 3 children, Lillia born 12th February 1903 Beeston, Doris born 3rd April 1907 1907 Nottm and Francis born 12th June 1908 in Nottingham a further child Cyril born 16th May 1914 died on 24th April 1915. In the 1911 census Sidney is living at 4 Nugent Street, Nottingham , he is shown as 30 yrs a cycle maker, he is living with his wife Mary Elizabeth 28 yrs and their children Lillia 8 yrs, Doris 4 yrs and Francis 2 yrs. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 8th March 1915, it was reduced to 20 shillings and 6 pence a week on 25th April 1915.
Private Sidney Ward, enlisted at Grantham on 8th January 1912 into the territorial army, he was 30 yrs of age, a cycle worker for Raleigh Cycles and was living at 44 Calcutta Street, Nottingham. He served with 7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles), and was embodied for war on 5th August 1914. On 24th August 1914 he was admitted to the Bute Hospital in Luton where he later died of pneumonia on 1st September 1914. It was reported that he had fallen ill through lying in the damp while guarding railway bridges in Nottingham. He was buried at Luton Church Burial Ground
In memoriam published 1st September 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WARD. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Sidney, who died at Bute Hospital, Luton, September 1st, 1914, late of the 1st Notts. and Derby.
