Walter George Ward known as George was the son of Walter John a fish market carter and Priscilla Ward née Freeman of 25 Gordon Road, Nottingham. His father Walter John was born in 1864 at Great Hale, Lincolnshire, his mother Priscilla Freeman was born in 1864 at Nottingham, they were married in 1890 at Nottingham, they had 7 children sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were John William b1893, Walter George b1894, Winifred Ivy b1896, Gertrude Rose b1897 all were born in St Ives, their last child Bernard was born in 1905 at Nottingham. in the 1911 census the family are living at 25 Gordon Road, Nottingham and are shown as Walter John 46 yrs a fish market carter, he is living with his wife Priscilla 47 yrs and their children, John William 17 yrs a screw cutter, Walter George 16 yrs a van lad for the Midland Railway, Winifred Ivy 15 yrs a plain nett doubler, Gertrude Rose 13 yrs a scholar and Bernard 6 yrs of age.
Lance Corporal George Ward enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 8th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He landed in France on 26th August 1915 and he was killed in action on 1st October 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorating on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
