John George was born in 1886 in Nottingham and was the son of Arthur Truman, and Hannah Trueman née Payne of Nottingham, his parents were married in 1885 in Nottingham, however his mother Hannah Payne was to die in 1893 and his father remarried a further two times in 1894 to Eliza Ann Limb and in 1899 to Annetta Dames Smith He married his wife Lilian May Kirk on 2nd March 1907 at the Nottingham Registry Office, they went on to have the following children all born in Nottingham, Gertrude Lilian born 25th March 1908, Thomas born 10th April 1910, Arthur born 25th February 1912 and Ernest born 1st August 1914, the family lived at 22 Flewitt Street, Alfred Street, Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at North Street, Sneinton Nottingham and are shown as John George 26 yrs a theatre assistant, he is living with his wife Lilian May 28 yrs a hosiery trimmer and their 2 children , Gertrude Lilian 3 yrs and Thomas 10 months also living with them is Fanny Kirk 61 yrs a lodger.
Gallipoli veteran, Sgt. John George Truman, had seen previous service with the 2nd battalion Grenadier Guards whom he had joined on 22nd July 1902 and was discharged from army service on 22nd July 1914 following 12 years service. He was not to be out of service for long, following the outbreak of the war he enlisted at Nottingham on 13th August 1914, he was 30 yrs and 59 days old, he was a cook and resided at 22 Flewitt Street, Great Alfred Street, Nottingham his next of kin was his wife Lilian of the same address. He served 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment and was promoted to acting sergeant on 10th April 1915 . He joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 1st July 1915 and was wound on 9th August 1915 , he had received a bullet wound to his right arm and shoulder whilst in action on Gallipoli and was admitted to 2nd field ambulance, he was transferred to the 24th casualty clearing station at 'C' beach and on 27th September 1915 he was invalided back to England and admitted to No 2 Western General Hospital at Manchester. Following his treatment and recovery he once again was posted and landed in France on 10th February 1916. He was promoted to Sergeant on 2nd March 1916 and was serving with B company 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters when he was killed in action on 25th January 1917. He is buried in Vermelles British Cemetery.
In memoriam published 25th January 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “TRUMAN. – In loving memory of our dear father, Sergt. J. G. Truman, Sherwoods, killed in action January 25th, 1917.
