Samuel Leake was born in 1876 at Costock and was the son of the late Wright a farm labourer and Elizabeth Leake née Ward of 13 Thorneywood Lane, Nottingham. His father Wright Leake was born in 1839 at Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire, he died in 1904 at Thorneywood Lane, Nottingham he was 65 yrs , his mother Elizabeth Ward was born in 1843 at Kegworth, they were married in 1864 at Barrow upon Soar and went on to have the following children, John b1866, William 1867, Elizabeth b1870, all were born in Barrow, they had a further daughter Mary b1872 Rempstone, and then Tom b1874, Sam b1876 Harry b1878 Eliza b1879 all were born in Costock, Charles b1882 Mapperley and George b1883 Mapperley. Samuel married his wife Clara Watthey (born 1st February 1878 ) in 1903 at Nottingham and lived at 3 Edwinstow Ave, Clumber Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, they went on to have the following children, Leslie born 4th June 1907. William Victor born 3rd June 1911 and Alfred Samuel born 22nd April 1914 , he died on 20th December 1917. In the 1911 census the family were shown living at 54 Massey Street Nottingham and are shown as Samuel Leake 35 yrs a carter he is living with his wife Clara 33 yrs and their son Leslie 4 yrs of age. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and 3 pence a week which commenced on 30th July 1917, this was reduced to 22 shillings and 11 pence a week on 21st December 1917 following the death of their son Alfred Samuel.
Private Samuel Leake enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at West Bridgford, Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 29th December 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Theipval Memorial, Somme, France.
