Family History

Born Samuel Bernal Osborne (in national birth register) he was born in 1899 and baptised on 14th May 1899 at St Mary's Church Radcliffe on Trent, he was the son of Richard a general labourer and Mary Ann Osborne née Aleen of Bingham Road, Radcliffe on Trent. Richard was born in 1869 at Radcliffe, Mary Ann Allen was born in 1867 at Shepshed, Leicestershire, they were married in 1898 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had a further son Percy born 1903 at Radcliffe. In 1911 the family were living at Bingham Road, Radcliffe on Trent, Richard is 42 yrs and a general labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 44 yrs and their 2 sons, Samuel Bernal 12 yrs and Percy 8 years old.

Military History

Private Samuel Bernal Osborne served as Bernard Osborne, he enlisted at Nottingham and initially served with the service number 31841 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 2nd September 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on Vis-en-Artois Memorial, panel 7
