Joseph was born in 1893 in Nottingham, he was the son of Frederick George William, a needle maker and Harriett Crinage née Mills of 87 St Mathias Road, Nottingham. His father known as George was born in 1865 in Duffield Derbyshire, his mother Harriett Mills was born in 1866 in Nottingham, they were married in Nottingham in 1885 and went on to have 5 children, their only daughter Mabel was born 1886 in Sneinton, and they had four sons all born in Nottingham, George b1891, Joseph b1893, Cyril b1902 and Harry b104. In both the 1901 and 1911 census the family are living at 87 St Matthias Road, Nottingham, in the 1911 they are shown as George 46 yrs head of the family a needle maker in lace curtain works, he is living with his wife Harriett 45 yrs and their 4 sons , George 20 yrs a labourer in an iron foundry, Joseph 18 yrs a joiner, Cyril 9yrs and Harry 7 yrs both scholars.
Private Joseph Crinage, 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment) He landed in France on 11th November 1914. He died of wounds at No. 19 Field Ambulance on 19th February 1915. He is buried in Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres (grave ref IX.B.69)
Nottingham Post obituary (abridged) 8 March 1915: 'Crinage. died of wounds in France, February 19th, Private J Crinage, 2nd Sherwood Foresters, son of George and Harriet Crinage, age 22.' Nottingham Post obituary (abridged) 11 March 1915: 'Private J Crinage, 2nd Sherwood Foresters, 37 (sic) St Matthias' Road, Nottingham, died of wounds age 22.' In memoriam published 19th February 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- CRINAGE. – Died of wounds received in action, February 19th, 1915, Private J. Crinage, 2nd Sherwood Foresters, aged 22 years. The heavenly stars shine on the distant grave, on the one we loved but could not [illegible], too far away thy grave to see, but not to think of thee. “CRINAGE. – Died of wounds received in action, February 19th, 1915, Private J. Crinage, 2nd Sherwood Foresters, aged 22 years.
