William Arthur was born in 1897 in Derby and was the son of William Pridgen Barrand a maltsters labourer and Charlotte Barrand, née Horner of 35 Edginton Street, Thorneywood, Nottingham. His father William Pridgen was born in 1871 in Boston Lincolnshire, his mother Charlotte Horner was born in 1871 in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1896 in Derby and went on to have 4 children all of whom were born in Derby they were :- William Arthur b1897, Elizabeth b1900, Albert b1901 and Ernest b1905. In the 1911 census the family are living at 9 Ridgway Terrace, Ridgeway Street, Nottingham and are shown as William 39 yrs a maltsters labourer head of the family he is living with his wife Charlotte 40 yrs and his children William Arthur, 14 yrs a scholar, Elizabeth 11 yrs a scholar, Albert 9 yrs a scholar and Ernest 6 yrs a scholar.
Lance Corporal William Arthur Barrand, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2/7th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles), was reported missing on 21st March 1918 later confirmed killed in action on that date. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 26th November 1918 : - “BARRAND. – In ever-loving memory of Lance-Cpl. W. A.
