Family History

Herbert Wilson was born in 1895 at Basford and was the son of Harry, a lace maker, and Elizabeth Wilson née Verney of 33 Beverley Street, St Ann's Nottingham. His father Henry was born in 1852 at Chesterfield and his mother Elizabeth Verney was born in 1853 at Nottingham. They were married in 1873 at Nottingham and went on to have 10 children; sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children were: Arthur b1875, Nellie b1876, Edith b1878, Henry b1882, Elizabeth b1883, Ernest b1889, Edward b1892 and Herbert b1895. All were born in Nottingham In the 1911 census the family was living at 33 Beverley Street, Nottingham, Henry was 59 yrs of age, a lace maker, and living with his wife 58 yrs who was assisting him in his business. He listed all his children on the census but it is not clear if they were all at Beverley Street on the night of the census: Arthur Wilson 36 yrs married a lace presser, Nellie Wilson 35 yrs married a lace hand, Edith Wilson 33 yrs married a lace mender, Henry Wilson 29 yrs married a lace maker, Elizabeth Wilson 28 yrs married a book binder, Ernest Wilson single 22 yrs a tram conductor, Edward Wilson 19 yrs single a point cleaner, Herbert Wilson 16 yrs single a hosiery hand. Also listed were Nellie Wilson no age, and Bertha Wilson no age. However, both these names were crossed out and noted as 'dead'

Military History

Private Herbert Wilson enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 13th October 1915 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.

Notice in the Nottingham Post, 25 October 1915: 'Wilson. Killed in action 11/13 October, Private Herbert Wilson, age 20 years. Memorial service St Ann's Church.'
