Family History

Walter Burkitt was born in 1886 he was the son of John a joiners labourer and Emma Burkitt née Spicer. John was born in 1847 at Market Rasen, Lincolnshire and Emma Spicer was born in 1848 at Colsterworth, they were married on 25th December 1873 at Colsterworth, they had 5 children. In 1901 they lived at 10 Leicester Street Nottingham. In 1911 Walter was living at 10 Leicester Street, Nottingham, he is 25 yrs single and a warehouseman he is living with Lily Burkitt 27 yrs. Walter married Mary Jane Drayton on 4th August 1913 at St Ann's in Nottingham they lived at Leicester Street, Nottingham,

Military History

Walter Burkitt enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters and sometime after 1st January 1916 was posted to the 1st battalion in France. He was captured during a German raid on their trenches on 4th April 1917 and died of wounds as a prisoner of war on 24th April 1917.He is buried in Caudry British Cemetery, grave IV.C.2.

Nottingham Evening Post 'In Memoriam' (abridged) 9 July 1917. BURKITT reported missing April 16th (sic) 1917, now dead, Private W Burkitt, Sherwood Foresters, 10 Leicester Street, age 31. Wife. In memoriam published 24th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- BIRKITT. – In loving memory of my dear husband, Pte. Walter Burkitt, died of wounds in prisoner of war hospital, April 24th, 1917. Though death divides, fond memories cling.
