William was the son of John and Harriet Stretton and the brother of Charles Henry, Florence, James, Edward and Bertha Stretton. In 1891, they lived at 22, Drake Street, St Mary's and by 1901 at 40, Coalpit Lane (both Nottingham). In 1908, William married Mary Ann Bunting at Nottingham and in 1911 they lived at 10, Duncombe Street, St Ann's, Nottingham, with their son Frederick. They had three more sons - Eric F (1913), Douglas J (1917) and Leonard W (1920). By 1922, they lived at 11, Lily Street, Dame Agnes Street, St Ann's Nottingham.
Stretton enlisted 26/8/1914 and arrived in theatre (France) 18/3/1915. He was discharged 17/12/1915 with gunshot wounds to the knee and hand and was awarded a Silver War Badge (716). He became 60% disabled and by 1922 was receiving a weekly pension of 34s. 6d.
He was born J/A/S1886 and died O/N/D/1963 (registered Basford). This is a probable identification. It seems Stretton was placed on the St Andrew's memorial in error. David Nunn
