David Mattock

David was the son of William Mattock and Sarah Ann Mattock (nee Hutchinson) His father, William, was born in Arnold, Nottingham, birth registered 1855 (J/F/M Basford), and his mother, Sarah, was born about 1859, also in Nottingham. They were married in Nottingham in 1878 (marriage registered O/N/D). According to the 1911 Census which William completed, they had had six children of whom two had died and only four were still living; one child probably died in infancy but the other died as a young adult. Five children were named on the census between 1881 and 1911: William (b. 1878, A/M/J Basford), Tom (b. 1880, J/A/S Nottingham), Arthur (b.1884, A/M/J Nottingham), David (b. 1887, O/N/D Nottingham) and Albert (b. 1893, A/M/J Nottingham). Tom's death was registered in 1902 (J/F/M Nottingham); he was 21 years old. In 1881 William (26), a hose rotating power framework knitter, and Sarah (24) were living with their two sons, William (2) and Tom (7 months), at 11 Shipstone Terrace, Shipstone Street, Radford. By 1891 the family was living at 36 North Sherwood Street with the widowed Ann Mattock (65) who was head of the household. William was still working as a framework knitter. He and Sarah now had four sons; William (12), Tom (10), Arthur (6) and David (3). There were also two female boarders in the household. The second son, Tom, married Ruth Cooke in 1900 (marriage registered A/M/J Nottingham) and at the time of the next census in 1901 they were living at 36 Beverley Street, St Ann's in the home of William Beckworth (29) who had a wife and young daughter. According to the information provided on the census, Ruth was William Beckworth's sister. Tom was employed as a French polisher and Ruth was a cigar maker. There is a record of the death of a Tom Mattock in 1900 (registered J/A/S Nottingham), who was born about 1900 and died before his first birthday; it is presumed he was Tom and Ruth's child. William and Sarah and three of their sons, Arthur (16), a clerk, David (13) and Albert (7), were living at 4 Conway Grove, Nottingham, in the ecclesiastical parish of St Andrew's, at the time of the 1901 Census. The eldest son, William, has not yet been traced on either the 1901 or 1911 Census but it is possible that he was married by 1901 and living independently as there is a note in an army record of legatees that William had a wife, Marie, and children. Arthur married Beatrice Mary Sinclair (birth registered 1884, J/F/M Nottingham) in 1908 (marriage registered O/N/D Nottingham) and in 1911 they were living at 25 Herbert Street, Nottingham. Arthur (25) was a book keeper for a publishing company and Beatrice (26) was a dressmaker. Their first child, Edna Mary (10 months), had been born the previous year in 1910 (A/M/J Nottingham) and in 1913 they had a son, Arthur Wallace (birth registered O/N/D Nottingham). By 1911 William and Sarah had moved to Heskey Street, Nottingham. The address is given on various official records as either 60 Heskey Street or 60 Rowland Terrace, Heskey Street, Nottingham. Only Albert (18), William and Sarah's youngest son, was still living at home; David must have joined the army some time before because in 1911 the 23-year old was listed as a shoemaker's boy in the 3rd Bn Grenadier Guards, quartered in London. The youngest brother, Albert, married Marie Eugenie Turner (b. 10 October 1892) in 1914 (marriage registered O/N/D Nottingham). David's older brother, William, served in the 2nd Bn Manchester Regiment (5466 Corporal) and was killed on 13 January 1915 (Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery). No record has yet been found to indicate that either Arthur or Albert served in the Great War. Sarah Ann, died on 8 September 1916 and was buried in Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery. William, died at the age of 69 in 1924 (death registered June Nottingham) and was also buried in the Church Cemetery. Arthur died in 1931 at the age of 47 and was buried on 31 July 1931. His widow later married Francis Whyler (marriage registered 1932, J/F/M Nottingham) and died in in 1966 at the age of 81. Albert died on 12 May 1940 at the age of 50 and was buried in the family grave in Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery on 15 May 1940. The probate record gave Albert's address as 60 Rowland Terrace, Heskey Street, his parents' former home. His widow, Marie Eugenie, married John Household in 1943 and died aged 90 in 1983 (death registered September Newark).
