Claude was born in 1891 in Nottingham and was the son of Edmund a butcher and cattle dealer his first wife the late Annie Mason néé Minnitt. of 68 Mapperley Road, Nottingham. His father was born in 1864 in Flintham and his mother Annie Minnitt was born in 1868 in Nottingham, they were married in 1890 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children all born in Nottingham, Jennie Minnett b1893, Gertrude b1896, Gladys Irene b1900, Harry b1902 His mother Annie died on 12th April 1906 in Nottingham she was 42 yrs of age. His father Edmund went on to re marry Emma Shepperd (born 1878 at Scarrington) in 1906 in Nottingham, they had the following children Kathleen Mary b1907, Constance b1908, Olive b1911 Fred William b1916 and Margaret Joan b1918 all born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 240 Woodborough Road, Nottingham they are shown as Edmund 47 yrs a butcher and cattle dealer he is living with his wife Emma 33 yrs and his children Kathleen Mary 3 yrs, Constance 2yrs, Jennie 17 yrs, Gertrude 15 yrs, Gladys 10 yrs and Harry Edmund 9 yrs.
Corporal Claude Mason, enlisted in Nottingham 11th October 1915 , he was 24 yrs and 2 months old, he lived at 240 Woodborough Road, Nottingham and was a butcher, his next of kin was his father Edmund of the same address. He arrived at Aldershot on 18th October 1915 and was posted to the infantry Supply Depot, Army Service Corps. He embarked at Southampton on 24th October 1916 and sailed to join the Idian Expeditionary Force landing at Amara on 23rd February 1917. He was admitted to the 16th Casualty Clearing Station at Baghdad on 20th May 1917 and later transferred to No. 1 British General Hospital, Amara. His hospital case notes show he suffered badly before succumbing to a condition the doctors struggled to diagnose and cause of death was given as Hepatic abscess due to climate and service, he died on 27th May 1917 and is buried at Amra War Cemetery Grave Reference: XIII G 16
