Family History

Bernard Thomas Hawley was born in 1887 at Nottingham, the son of the late Thomas a lace maker and Emma Millicent Hawley née Whitehead and the brother of Thomas Arthur, Ada Jennie and Johanna Hawley of 7 Cambria Grove Cranmer Street Nottingham. Thomas was born in 1853 at Hyson Green, he died in 1897 aged 44 yrs, they were married on 18th May 1880 at St Pauls Church, Hyson Green, they went on to have 6 children. In 1911 the family were living at 7 Cranmer Grove, Cranmer Street, Nottingham, Emma is 54 yrs and a widow she is a lace finisher. Bernard Thomas is 23 yrs single and a traveller for a fancy goods firm.

Military History

Private Bernard Thomas Hawley enlisted at Nottingham on 19th November 1915 and went to France 29th March 1916.he was 27 yrs of age. He was killed in action, 1st July 1916, aged 28, during the attack on Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.Buried Foncquevillers Military Cemetery, France. Plot 1. Row L.
