Harold Corden was born in 1888 in Nottingham and was the son of Samuel a Silversmith and Elizabeth Corden née Truswell of 115 Woodborough Road, Nottingham. His father Samuel was born in 1858 in Draycott, Derbyshire and his mother Elizabeth Truswell was born in 1860 in Nottingham, they were married in 1880 in Nottingham and went on to have 5 children all of whom were born in Nottingham, Lily b1883, Mary b1884, Harold b188, Edith b1893 and Percy b1897. In the 1911 census the family are residing at 115 Woodborough Road, Nottingham and are shown as Samuel 53 yrs a silversmith, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 51 yrs and their children, Lily 28 yrs a lace machinist, Harold 23 yrs a silversmith, Edith 18 yrs a shop assistant and Percy 14 yrs an office boy. Harold married Jane Chew (born 6th October 1891) in 1914 at Nottingham, they went on to have a son Harold Samuel born 29th June 1914 in Nottingham, they lived at 20 Daybrook Street, Sherwood, Nottingham. Commencing 28th July 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week.
Private Harold Corden, served with the 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was formerly of the Robin Hood Rifles. He was reported missing on 20 September 1918, but his death was not confirmed until January the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial (Panel 7).
Death notices published in the Nottingham Evening Post on 24th January 1919 :- CORDEN. – Missing September 20th, 1918, now reported killed that date, Pte. H. Corden, S. F., of 20 Daybrook-street, Sherwood. – From his sorrowing wife and child. “CORDEN. – Killed in action, September 20th, 1918, Pte. Harold Corden, Sherwood Foresters, the beloved elder son of Mr. and Mrs. S.
