Frank Collins was born in 1880 the son of William a landscape gardener and Betsy Collins née Whitehouse Mathews, of 9 Bangor Street, Nottingham. William was born in 1847 at Costock, Betsy Whitehouse Mathews was born in 1842 at Eston, Northamptonshire they were married in 1864 their marriage was recorded in the Dudley registration district, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 his parents were living at 9 Bangor Stret, Nottingham, William is 64 yrs a landscape gardener, he is living with his wife Betsy 69 yrs and two of their children, Frank married Eliza Ann Whitaker (born 3rd October 1884) in 1910 at Nottingham. they lived at 4, Peel Villas, Querneby Rd., Mapperley, Nottingham. In 1911 they were living at 11 Charnwood Terrace, Nottingham, Frank is 30 yrs of age and a landscape gardener, Eliza Ann is 26 yrs of age and is a blouse machinist. Commencing 2nd April 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Frank Collins originally served with the Royal Navy, he enlisted on 26th May 1900 aged 20 yrs, he served on board HMS Repulse as a stoker 2nd class. in the 1901 census he was with the Royal Navy at Gibralter he was invalided from the Navy on 8th May 1903. Private Frank Collins enlisted at Nottingham, He went to France on 25th June 1915 and was killed in action, on 1st July 1916, aged 36, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
