Family History

Albert Owen Clowes was born in 1897 in Nottingham and was the son of John Owen Clowes and Hannah Clowes née Harvey. In 1901 they lived at 1 Goodhead Terrace and in 1911 at 21 Florence Street, Crocus Street (both Meadows Nottingham). His father John Owen was born in 1860 in Derbyshire and his mother Hannah Harvey was born in 1863 in Kirkby in Ashfield. They were married in 1883 in Nottingham and went on to have 6 children, sadly 1 died in infancy. Their children were Ada b1885 Nottingham, Edith b1887 Derbyshire, Harriett b1895 Derbyshire, Elsie b1895 Derbyshire, Albert b1897 Nottingham and Mabel b1901 Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 21 Florence Street, Meadows, Nottingham, and are shown as Hannah married 48 yrs a cop winder she is living with her children Ada 26 yrs a lace jenner, Elsie 16 yrs a lady clerk, Albert 13 yrs an errand boy and Mabel 10 yrs a scholar. Her husband John Owen Clowes is not shown at the family address on the night of the census.

Military History

Lance Corporal Albert Owen Clowes enlisted 1st June 1915 at Nottingham incorrectly giving his age as 19 yrs (his birth was registered A/M/J/1897). He gave his occupation as a fitter and his address as 5 Somercote Grove, Meadows, Nottingham, and his next of kin was his father John Owen Clowes of the same address. He served with 179th Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers, and landed in France on 14thApril 1916. He was wounded by a shell in his leg and chest and died from these wounds at 43 Casualty Clearing Station on 29th March 1917. He is buried in Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty.
