Family History

Joseph Clark was born in 1881 the son of the late Robert an iron merchants clerk and Maria Clark née Greenside of 1 Welbeck Street, Nottingham. Robert was born in 1842 at Beverley he died in 1903 aged 61 yrs, Maria Greenside was born in 1844 at Beverley, they were married on 27th March 1865 at St Marys Church, Beverley. they went on to have 8 children. In 1911 his widowed mother Maria is living at 49 Albany Road, Nottingham, she is living with her daughter Florrie 25 yrs. In 1911 Joseph is living at 13 Ladypool Road, Sparkbrook, Birmingham. with Annie Peabody 56 yrs a widow and her family, Joseph is shown as being single, 28 yrs and a florists assistant.

Military History

Private Joseph Clark enlisted on 9th December 1915 in Birmingham, giving his age as 34 yrs and 8 months, he was an assistant seedsman, living at Moseley, Birmingham. Posted to the reserves he was mobilised for war on 20th March 1916 and was posted to the 1/8th battalion Worcestershire Regiment. He embarked from Southampton on 29th July 1916 disembarking the following day at Rouen, he joined his battalion in the field on 7th August 1916. He was killed in action on 5th November 1916 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
