Arthur William Brierley was born in 1895 the son of Phillip William [1863-1920] a chauffeur and Frances (née Markham [1866-1944]) Brierley née Markham and the brother of John Cecil (died 10th December 1918 after army discharge) Hilda and Annie Brierley. Phillip William married Frances Markham on 23rd April 1892 at All Hallows Church, Gedling in 1911 the family are living at 7 Marple Street, Nottingham, Phillip is 48 yrs and a chauffeur he is living with Frances 45 yrs and their 4 children, Cecil is 17 yrs and an assistant fruiterer and Arthur is 16 yrs and an office boy.
Private Arthur William Brierley enlisted at Nottingham, he was killed in action on 27th April 1917 whilst serving in the line near Templeux, France and is buried at Templeux-Le-Guerard British Cemetery, France. Plot 1. Row C. Grave 15.
His brother Corporal John Cecil Brierley enlisted on 1st October 1914 at Nottingham, he served with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters, he saw no service overseas and was discharged from the Army on 21st August 1916 due to disease. He was awarded a Silver War Badge no 53,061 and died on 10th December 1918 at Nottingham. He was buried in Carlton Cemetery.
