Arthur James was born in 1899 in Nottingham and was the son of Arthur a fitter at a waterworks and Harriett Bonsall née Denman of 84 Exeter Road, Nottingham. His father Arthur was born in 1876 in Nottingham, his mother Harriett Denman was born in 1871 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1898 in Nottingham and had a further son Ernest born in 1901 in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at 84 Exeter Road, Nottingham and are shown as Arthur 35 yrs a fitter in a waterworks, he is living with his wife Harriett 40 yrs and their two sons Arthur 11 yrs and Ernest 10 yrs.
Private Arthur James Bonsall, enlisted at Nottingham , he initially served with service number TR/5/110415 in the Training Reserve battalion and then served with the the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. He died as a German prisoner of war on 30th August 1918, after being taken prisoner on 27th May 1918. He is buried in Glageon Communal Cemetery Extension.
In memoriam published 8th May 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BONSALL. – Pte. Arthur J. Bonsall, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Bonsall, 7 Conway-street, 1/5th Yorks. Regt., captured 27th May, 1918, now officially reported died in Germany 30th August, 1918, aged 18.
