Urban Udall Machin was born in 1899 in Nottingham and was the son of Sam Hilton a iron plater and Ada Machin née Stevenson of 23 Woolmer Road, Meadows, Nottingham His father Sam Hilton was born in 1863 in Clay Cross Derbyshire and his mother Ada Stevenson was born in 1867 in Nottingham, they were married in 1886 in Nottingham and went on to have 7 children all of whom were born in Nottingham, they were Harold Udall b1887, Archibald Udall b188, Urbad Udall b1899,Prestwood Udall b1893, Hida Annie b1895, Elsie Udall b1897 and Sam Udall Machin b1905. In the 1911 census the family lived at 23 Woolmer Road Meadows Nottingham and were shown as Sam Hilton Machin 48 yrs an iron plater, he is living with his wife Ada 44 yrs and their children, Harold Udall 24 yrs a photographer, Archibald Udall 23 yrs a letter press machine winder, Urban Udall 21 yrs a gas office clerk, Prestwood Udall 18 yrs a carpenter. Hilda Annie 16 yrs a lace hand Elsie Udall 14 yrs a blouse finisher and Sam Udall 6 yrs. Urban married Winnie Smalley in 1916 in Nottingham, they lived at 4a Willoughby Street, Lenton, Nottingham Following his death the ministry of pensions wrote to his widow Winnie in a letter dated 2nd November 1917 informing her that should would receive a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week with effect from 5th November 1917.
Private Urban Udall Machin, attested at Nottingham on 11th December 1915, he gave his age as 23 yrs and three months and his address as 23 Woolmer Road, Meadows, Nottingham. He was posted to the reserves the following day and was mobilised for war on 23rd February 1916. He was posted to the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters and embarked from Folkstone on 25th February 1917 disembarking the following day at Boulogne. He was serving with the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters when he was killed in action on 15th April 1917. He is buried in Feuchy Chapel British Cemetery, Wancourt.Feuchy Chapel British Cemetery, Wancourt (grave ref II.G.2).
